How to eat Sushi

The first, and infact the only, rule is: never resort to a knife and fork! That aside, you are free to partake of sushi as you wish. Admittedly, chopsticks (hashi) are usually used but you can also use your fingers. It is said that sushi tastes better that way and in Japan it is even considered good etiquette. With both methods it is important that sushi is never bitten off in pieces, otherwise it falls apart completely. Therefore put the whole piece in your mouth.

Besides sushi and hashi, your table will be set with a little bowl of shoyu (soya sauce), wasabi (green horseradish paste) and gari (pickled ginger). For a tasty experience, pour some soya sauce into a little bowl and add a small amount of horseradish paste - but be warned: this paste is extremely hot. Another possibility is to spread some wasabi onto the sushi and then to dip the sushi in soya sauce and eat it.

Delicious sushi follows sushi. Eat a small piece of ginger between sushi courses or have a sip of miso soup or green tea to clear the taste buds for a new taste.

Enjoy and have fun with your sushi.
